Nephetiti & Sweetie Go To The Zoo
Performance Outline, JK - Grade 5 for Schools, Public Libraries, Daycares & Book Stores
Written By: J. NICHOLE NOËL - Performance Outline
Award-winning performance artiste and author ~J. Nichole Noël~ was born in Trinidad. Her family migrated to Canada in 1970. On her first day of school she met flaming red-haired Darlene, whose parents were from Germany and an unforgettable friendship began into adulthood. Although the characters in the books are of African and Indian descent, J. Nichole emphasizes that true friendship is not limited to creed or race and can only be found within the mixed-matched vibrant colours of one's heart.
There will be approximately a 10 minute interactive prep Q & A period with children regarding language and cultural similarities between Canada, Africa and India. Illustrations will be seen via a Power Point presentation. Children are prompted to repeat key phrases throughout performance. After the performance there will be a post 5-10 minute Q & A period. At this time children are encouraged to stand up and relate the messages they have taken from the story. Children will also have a hands-on opportunity to examine international musical instruments from India and Africa, African masks and take pictures with Nephetiti's 6ft wide banana hat.
A post-presentation questionnaire will be provided to teacher /librarian after presentation. This questionnaire explores the geography of the continents and countries mentioned in the story and shown on the Power Point. Maps of Canada, U.S.A., Asia and Africa are provided for children to name, explore and colour. Interactive questionnaire sheets are also be provided to assist children in exploring their own views on being different and on friendship and diversity.
It is not necessary for the children to be pre-exposed to the story outside of its overview and basic information about the author. Because this is a high energy presentation, it is necessary that teachers/librarians be aware of the performance outline in consideration of children with special needs (eg. children repeating keys phrases, all at once, may be a bit loud to sensitive ears).
Please note: With respect to time limitations due to class scheduling, it is recommended that an order form be sent home prior to presentation. Pre-autographed copies will then be brought to school the day of presentation. Order forms as been provided with this package. Book prices are $9.99 tax included. 15% of all book sales would be donated back to the school within 7 days of presentation along with a copy of the book. Please also note: Ms. Noel has books of poetry for adults as well.
